Objective, summary and perspectives:
The stratigraphy of the Circum-Mediterranean Neogene is a “hot” topic and several projects are currently working on a refinement of the correlations between the various Paratethyan Basins and the Mediterranean Region. These efforts led to major breakthroughs but caused also controversies and contradictions. In the RCMNS interim colloquium in Vienna 2025, a number of overviews and syntheses of the current state of stratigraphic correlation in the Mediterranean-Paratethyan System have been presented. That valuable contributions on the oceanography, paleoclimatology and biotic response – marine and terrestrial – in this crucial region demonstrated impressively the complexity of the Mediterranean-Paratethys paleoenvironmental system.
The present RCMNS interim colloquium attracted about 45 friends and colleagues from 15 countries actively participating the vivid but friendly discussions on presented data and interpretations. Among these, about one quarter was represented by the young generation student researchers, promising sustainable future to our research branch. We enjoyed very much the scientific program, the fair-weather conditions during the geologic excursion, as well as the accompanying program on the evenings. Some impressions on the event have been provided in the photo-gallery added below.
The last, but not least, one of the conclusions by the final discussion round of the meeting, was the necessity of organization, every second year in the future, a corresponding interim colloquium. This should install a platform providing on a regular base updates on the highly productive and fascinating research of the Neogene Mediterranean-Paratethyan System.
