Archaeology library

The Department of Prehistory’s library contains works on prehistory from all over Europe as well as from Asia, Africa and America, with a particular focus on works from Central and South-Eastern Europe.

The library is currently compiling a subject catalogue which will include not only monographs categorised according to their subject but also all journal articles. Works are usually provided with several subject codes giving an indication of what the book or article is about. Our library contains works in all European languages with a focus on the period from the Palaeolithic to the Middle Ages.

However, since almost nobody is familiar with all these languages in detail, summaries and illustrations are used to communicate the essence of the works. Combined with the subject codes, this makes it possible to deepen one's knowledge of prehistory and stay up to date with the latest research findings.

Important: This project is currently fully booked!

Students or former students of prehistory and protohistory who would like to help out in our department library and at the same time deepen their knowledge and stay up to date with new research.
Citizen Scientists are welcome to volunteer in the library at any time.
In the library of the Department of Prehistory at the Natural History Museum Vienna.
