Dr.
Albrecht Komarek
- Waterbeetle research in Africa south of Sahara
- Taxonomic revision of the genus Anacaena (Hydrophilidae)
- I was born in Vienna in April 1948 and an Austrian national. I studied medicine and earned the medical degree at the University of Vienna in 1973. Subsequently I specialized in Neurology and psychiatry in Austria. Since 1981 I lead a private medical practice in Mödling near Vienna. I absolved the basic military service in Austria. Since 1998 I am free scientific co-worker of the Museum of Natural History in Vienna where I joined the waterbeetle collection and research Center of Dr. Manfred Jäch. I collaborated in several scientific projects (Rote Listen der gefährdeten Tiere in Österreich, China Water Beetle Survey). During several trips within Europe, to China, Argentina, and several African countries (Mali, Bénin, Togo) I obtained experience in collecting water insects. Within the water beetle Center I got a good training in preparing and determining water beetles and in the basics of taxonomy. In the last four years I specialized in taxonomy of Hydrophilidae (Coleoptera). Currently I am conducting a revision of the hydrophilid genus Anacaena, and together with Dr. Georg Goergen I am preparing a key to the genera of hydrophilids of Africa.
